“More Beautiful You” LYRICS by Jonny Diaz

LITTLE GIRL FOURTEEN FLIPPING THROUGH A MAGAZINE
SAYS SHE WANTS TO LOOK THAT WAY
BUT HER HAIR ISN’T STRAIGHT HER BODY ISN’T FAKE
AND SHE’S ALWAYS FELT OVERWEIGHT

WELL LITTLE GIRL FOURTEEN I WISH THAT YOU COULD SEE
THAT BEAUTY IS WITHIN YOUR HEART
AND YOU WERE MADE WITH SUCH CARE YOUR SKIN YOUR BODY AND YOUR HAIR
ARE PERFECT JUST THE WAY THEY ARE

THERE COULD NEVER BE A MORE BEAUTIFUL YOU
DON’T BUY THE LIES DISGUISES AND HOOPS THEY MAKE YOU JUMP THROUGH
YOU WERE MADE TO FILL A PURPOSE THAT ONLY YOU COULD DO
SO THERE COULD NEVER BE A MORE BEAUTIFUL YOU

LITTLE GIRL TWENTY-ONE THE THINGS THAT YOU’VE ALREADY DONE
ANYTHING TO GET AHEAD
AND YOU SAY YOU’VE GOT A MAN BUT HE’S GOT ANOTHER PLAN
ONLY WANTS WHAT YOU WILL DO INSTEAD

WELL LITTLE GIRL TWENTY-ONE YOU NEVER THOUGHT THAT THIS WOULD COME
YOU STARVE YOURSELF TO PLAY THE PART
BUT I CAN PROMISE YOU THERE’S A MAN WHOSE LOVE IS TRUE
AND HE’LL TREAT YOU LIKE THE JEWEL YOU ARE

SO TURN AROUND YOU’RE NOT TOO FAR
TO BACK AWAY BE WHO YOU ARE
TO CHANGE YOUR PATH GO ANOTHER WAY
IT’S NOT TOO LATE YOU CAN BE SAVED
IF YOU FEEL DEPRESSED WITH PAST REGRETS
THE SHAMEFUL NIGHTS HOPE TO FORGETS
CAN DISAPPEAR THEY CAN ALL BE WASHED AWAY
BY THE ONE WHO’S STRONG CAN RIGHT YOUR WRONGS
CAN RID YOUR FEARS DRY ALL YOUR TEARS
AND CHANGE THE WAY YOU LOOK AT THIS BIG WORLD
HE WILL TAKE YOUR DARK DISTORTED VIEW
AND WITH HIS LIGHT HE WILL SHOW YOU TRUTH
AND AGAIN YOU’LL SEE THROUGH THE EYES OF A LITTLE GIRL

  1. Thank you for the post. I think this song is really powerful and it speaks clearly of the lies girls fall for. Having teenage sisters has really opened my eyes to the whole arena of image and image keeping among teenager. The survey from 2004 mentioned in the article is very accurate. Remembering my teenage years, girls started wearing beauty products toward the end of high school (of course there were always the handful of girls who used them since middle school) but now you almost have to start in middle school because everyone else uses them. My own sisters started when they were 12 (I started when I was a senior in high school!), so it is very shocking to see this kind of drastic shift in such a short period of time.

My heart really breaks when I see girls sucked into this kind of lie. When I interact with teenage girls its actually really sad to see them get all ‘made-up’ to look good in front of other people or some guy they want to impress. It’s sad because you know that behind that ‘mask’ there really is a longing to feel loved and accepted.

I really admire and respect Diaz’s work with this song. I am thankful for people like him who really take this kind of issue seriously and take measures to address it.

I recently heard about a Youth Group in the Bay Area who is also attempting to reach out to Youth and teach them about true love- God’s Love. They are starting this movement called “Rise- Take a Stand for Jesus” with the hope that teenagers would not continue to fall into the lies of this world. Judging from their website https://www.interhigh.org/ seems exciting, but you can also get a feel for the heart of this group.

    Thanks again for the post.

  2. This is one of my new favorite songs. I hear it on WIBI all the time and it reminds me of my 11 year old daughter. She started Junior High this year and has already felt like she cannot measure up to certain girls her age. She is not athletic, and she is not a thin child. The first week of school she came home upset because a couple of students made fun of her weight. This song could not have came on at a better time. I tuned it up and said just listen to the words. Because it is true God could not make a more beautiful you. When she has a down day at school, I just remind there could never be a more beautiful her. Thanks for making this song, it has made jr. high more bearable for my little beautiful girl.

  3. i am 13 years old. when i was younger i was a bit over wieght and teased. when i started middle school kids just got meaner and meaner. i thought i had to change for people, that it was up to me to be skinny and the cool girl. so i stopped eating as much and started putting on way to much make-up for my age. it didnt work. i had a hard past year but now i have everything under control. this song and songs like it opened my eyes, i do not have to be perfect. i just have to be me. i know that now, and gained A LOT of knowledge from the expierence a long with a bunch of life long friends, this song is amazing i listen to it everyday, it gets me through some pretty hard stuff!

    1. thanks for sharing your experience maddy. I am so glad to hear you are doing well and songs similar to these have really opened your eyes. Perhaps your sharing will encourage someone else as well! 🙂

it really is a sad, sad world we live in – where everything in it promotes the external, things that are skin deep.

for those who may be struggling with these things, another way to help break from this way of thinking is to limit or stop the media intake. Lessen all those glamour images and messages from tv, movies, magazines and so on – that tell you, you need to look good to be valued. hogwash my friends. cut it from the source.

  4. I am about 12 years old and am in elementary school. I am glad I didn’t fall into the lies like “Sheer Cover” or “BareMinerals.” I am glad for me people say I am flawless because I “glow” but I will never care how I look. Never!

    1. thanks for your comment ana! I am glad to hear you have so many wonderful people who are letting you know that self-worth should not be based on image! Keep it up!
