<p>Google confirmed that YouTube is now averaging 4 BILLION views per day. They also confirmed that 60 hours of video is uploaded into the site, every MINUTE.</p>
<p>Back in 2010 we were awed that <strong><a title="YouTube Statistics Billions of Views" href="http://www.cleancutmedia.com/video/youtube-statistics-2-billion-views-per-day-infographic" target="_blank">YouTube hit 2 billion views per day</a>,</strong> bringing up many discussions about whether <strong><a title="YouTube Statistics - Help or Hurt?" href="http://www.cleancutmedia.com/video/youtube-statistics-the-ultimate-time-suck" target="_blank">YouTube was helping or hurting our culture</a></strong> as a whole.</p>
<p>Then Back in May 2011, a mere 8 months ago, <strong><a title="Youtube Birthday Statistics" href="http://www.cleancutmedia.com/video/youtube-statistics-growing-like-a-man-child-infographic" target="_blank">YouTube celebrate it&#8217;s 6th birthday</a></strong> by citing YouTube is averaging 3 billion views per day and 48 hours of video uploaded per minute. Incredible. At the time, YouTube cited this is equivalent of every US Resident watching at least 9 videos per day. That is EVERY US RESIDENT. That means if some guy without internet is not watching a video, someone is watching 18 times. But now at 4 Billion Views, YouTube has seen a 50% increase in views in about less than a year. At this rate, they would probably hit 5 billion within 6 months.</p>
<p><strong>Is there a ceiling to this? </strong></p>
<p><strong>How many videos can one person possibly watch in a day?</strong></p>
<p>That is an insane about of videos. We really need a resurgent of hobbies or find some meaningful work! Anyone have any good stories of replacing mundane video watching with something productive?</p>

<h3>Traditions vs &#8220;Being True to Yourself&#8221;</h3>
<p>One thing I wonder is how Pixar will go about portraying the breaking of traditions. In our culture, media often romanticizes and promotes the idea of self independence and doing what you feel is right, often at the expense of tradition and responsibilities. It is the idea to forget what everyone tells you because you need to be true to yourself. Rebelling against authority, and following your own sense of right and wrong is sprinkled everywhere because inwardly, we all want to do what we want to do. That is why it appeals to us. In many ways, tradition and duty is often given very little weight, though often traditions are there for good reason.</p>
<p>Movies that take protagonists that breaks traditions, relationships, perhaps cause a lot of hurt and pain, but in the end has everything work out, makes us a little bit more open to that idea that it really is all about being true to oneself. The value of self-sacrifice and holding to responsibilities and duty even if it puts a damper in one&#8217;s own desires and plans is undermined in many cases. Think about sacrificing careers to be with your family, giving up own interest for the betterment of the group, giving up your dream because of your commitment to something or someone.</p>
<p>Some movies do fine with these themes. Mulan comes to mind. Mulan is shown as self-sacrificial. She breaks traditional roles, not because she wants to gain something for herself, but to save her Father. But then there are movies where the main character simply does what he or she feels like because it makes them happy or in the name of love or because they are trying to be &#8220;true to herself,&#8221; meanwhile leaving a string of pain and hurts behind. (But then it all magically works out in the end right? So why not?)</p>
<p>But I will always give Pixar the benefit of the doubt. Unlike most movies, Pixar has always managed to churn out a good message and their movies seems to be sensitive to the family viewers. So hoping for the best and looking forward to Brave.</p>

<p>Coke has Coke Zero, Pepsi has Pepsi Max, and so Dr Pepper now has Dr Pepper TEN. Dr Pepper TEN caused quiet a stir from it&#8217;s launch due to the funny and semi-controversial ad. The TV commercial shows a mini-action film where a manly man drives through the dangerous jungle, Dr Pepper TEN in one hand, while shooting enemies and punching snakes with the other. It is action packed and ends with the quote &#8220;NOT FOR WOMEN.&#8221; Dr Pepper has taken a unique position of catering the drink to men, who perhaps view diet drinks as unmanly.</p>
<h3>Are Diet Drinks too Unmanly?</h3>
<p>Many years ago, Miller Brewing Company came out with Miller Lite, a beer with less calories. Great for those who wanted to avoid the beer belly and wanted to watch their weight. Yet there was real concern that men wouldn&#8217;t want to be associated with diet drinks because perhaps it wasn&#8217;t very manly. Miller chose to launch a bunch of TV commercials depicting manly men like Bubba Smith, Joe Frazier, and Ben Davidson to endorse the drinks and start arguing over different topics such as whether lite beer has &#8220;great taste&#8221; and &#8220;less filling.&#8221; By using manly men as well as focusing the argument over taste and body, Miller was able to divert the attention away from whether it was manly or not. To top it off, these ads would sometimes have these manly men argue then jump into a bar brawl. These series of ads are often ranked as one of the best ad campaigns in history. The ad campaign was a great success as nobody ever though of lite beer as unmanly.</p>

<p>The commercials caused a stir. Some people find it offensive and exclusionary especially due to the tagline &#8220;not for women.&#8221; Others think it&#8217;s simply funny and there is no real harm done. Just like certain shampoos or deodorants target women, many feel it&#8217;s not a big deal to just target men. One thing we can all agree on is that it has drawn the attention it intended do. The Facebook page has been buzzing with a lot of back and forth between the two camps. Women put up pictures of themselves drinking Dr Pepper TEN while others argue that it&#8217;s discriminating.</p>
<p>I personally don&#8217;t take much offense to the commercial mainly because it doesn&#8217;t degrade woman in anyway. It&#8217;s just a product focusing on a specific target group. I don&#8217;t like the fact that it plays on stereotypes of men, but so far the ads haven&#8217;t been offensive in anyway. Just to give perspective, I find those AXE ad campaigns highly offensive to women. Another product targeting men, but often degrading women in the progress. Dr Pepper TEN so far doesn&#8217;t do the latter.</p>
<h3>How does Dr Pepper TEN Taste vs. Diet Dr Pepper?</h3>
<p>But the real question is, how does it taste? Diet Dr Pepper has always been one of the better diet drinks that does an excellent job retaining the flavor of the original. Coke Zero is another. How about Dr Pepper TEN? I had one for the first time this week. It&#8217;s excellent. I actually like it slightly better than the Diet version. Plus I feel more manly. Just kidding. Don&#8217;t need a drink for that.</p>

It isn&#8217;t as well-done as the previous video, but clever none the less and a creative idea worth sharing.</p>

<p>Volkswagen did something most companies would not have thought of. Reveal their Super Bowl commercial before the Super Bowl! One may think, why? It takes away from the hype! Oh, but I see this as a good move on their part. In about 2 days, it already has 6 million views as it gets passed along virally, hogging all the attention, riding on the hype of all the anticipation. Good move Volkswagen. Also kudos on the nice, simple, clean cut commercial. The Video shows little Darth Vadar in his attempts to use the force. Watch it!</p>
<p>Of course the commercial says nothing about the car at all. Just trying to associate warm fuzzy feeling with the car and brand. <h3>iPhone Verizon vs AT&amp;T Commercials</h3>
<p>A clear shot at it&#8217;s &#8220;rival&#8221; AT&amp;T. You have to love the simplicity of this ad, yet it indirectly emphasizes their differentiator &#8211; their reputation as the best network. It builds their reputation and continues to link the idea that Verizon&#8217;s service is clearly better than AT&amp;Ts. It doesn&#8217;t directly attack anyone, but pokes a bit of fun, bringing out that &#8220;ooooHH&#8221; feeling we get when someone has a good witty, comeback. Or maybe it&#8217;s just me.</p>
<p>Meanwhile Apple laughs at all the excellent publicity they are getting as the two networks dual it out. Apple is the ultimate winner.</p>

<h3>Princess Leia &amp; Darth Vader Star Wars Subway Scene</h3>
<p>Princess Leia, Storm Troopers and Darth Vader invades the New York City subway car reenacting a scene from Star Wars. Since the white sliding doors were very similar to the doors from the rebel ship, they utilized multiple stations to have different characters enter into the scene. Very well done.</p>
<p>The buildup was great. By the time Darth Vader enters in the third station, every erupted in laughter. Especially as Darth Vader first time hit his head on the roof due to the height of his helmet.</p>

<h3>Frozen Grand Central by Improv Everywhere</h3>
<p>Imagine walking through one of the busiest train stations in New York then suddenly you realize everyone around you is frozen still! Sounds eerie? This is exactly what happened in Grand Central New York when 207 &#8220;agents&#8221; or participants all froze at exactly 2:30PM in all sorts of different poses and scenes.</p>
<p>Strangers started to talk to each other trying to figure out what is going on. Others took pictures with the frozen agents.</p>

<h3>Food Court Musical by Improv Everywhere</h3>
<p>16 Agents create a spontaneous musical in a food court in a Los Angeles mall. The cameras were hidden throughout the scene and their voices were amplified throughout the food court via wireless microphones and the mall&#8217;s announcement system.</p>
<p>This mission was spawned by requests from fans that thought it was so random that people just break out in song in musicals. So Improve Everywhere finally took up the call.</p>
<p>The best is the slow buildup where different people from the audience would join in the musical and break into song. Audience reaction was priceless especially during a couple &#8220;twists&#8221;&#8230;</p>
<p>The song was an original written by Scott Brown and Anthony King. Very well done. The choreography was done by Agent Tallaksen.</p>

<h3>Best Game Ever by Improv Everywhere</h3>
<p>Numerous Agents come to a random little league game and make it into a full major league baseball experience. The teams, coaches and parents have no idea what is going on. A huge crowd shows up, they setup a jumbotron, NBC Sports comes to announce the game over the PA system, and a blimp flies overhead capping this incredible experience for the children. The announcers knew the kid&#8217;s names, nicknames and the crowd was fired up throughout. Pretty sweet experience for the kids.</p>
<p>Apologies for the thumbnails of the crazy fans. Why they chose that thumbnail I don&#8217;t know, but the video itself is very clean. It was a fun experience for the kids involved.</p>

<h3>So Who is OK Go?</h3>
<p>Ok Go is a band formed back in 1998 that became famous through YouTube due to their incredibly creative music videos. In an era where music videos require lot of pizzazz and special effects, this four man band composed of Damian Kulash, Andy Ross, Time Nordwind and Dan Konopka took the online world by storm with their hilarious, low budget videos.</p>
<h3>Why is OK Go’s video highlighted on Clean Cut Media?</h3>
<p>Simply, because they are creative! We at Clean Cut Media, love.. wait for it.. Clean Cut Media. Rather than just critiquing all that is wrong in media, we also want to give credit to those who are able to produce clean yet creative spots. Any good examples of good advertising or good video should be recognized as a testament that not everything needs to be conform to inappropriate techniques we find in our culture.</p>

<p>Here is the latest OK Go Video. When you have time I recommend checking out all their videos. Each is uniquely creative. They&#8217;ve built their own hype and the need to be uniquely creative in each successive video &#8211; and they&#8217;ve done a good job of it! <p>OK Go soon cut ties with their recording label. It has been speculated that OK Go was upset that the label would not allow them to use viral means to spread their music video. They formed their own independent label called Paracadute Recordings.</p>

<h3>Google Chrome Speed Test Videos in Slow Motion</h3>
<p>Couple weeks ago, Google came out with a video that demonstrates the speed of it&#8217;s latest Chrome web browser. Why is it posted here on Clean Cut Media? Because we like to highlight videos that are well-made or are just simply clever. <p>In case anyone is interested. Google Chrome uses a JavaScript engines called V8 that is extremely fast. This new beta is reported to be about 35% faster than the previous. The previous in my experience is easily the faster browser out there, followed by Safari, then Firefox. I don&#8217;t even bother with Internet Explorer &#8211; it&#8217;s unbelievably slow.</p>

<p>Short videos are very difficult to create because the producer needs to sum up a quick story within a very short time frame usually around 1:30-2 minutes. Short films can range anywhere from 5 minutes to 20 minutes. To develop a story, create the right mood and have character development in such a short period takes much planning and creativity. Below are some of the excellent short films &amp; videos I&#8217;ve ran across in the past.<br />

<h3>Distraxion &#8211; Short Video</h3>
<p>Check out this awesome animation short video called Distraxion. Very clever and well made. All the story is developed in 1 minute and 48 seconds. Very entertaining.</p>

<h3>Signs &#8211; Short Film</h3>
<p>2009 Cannes Lions Winner. I really enjoyed this short film. The main characters don&#8217;t say a single word throughout the film. I love how it really highlights the monotony of life. I had wanted to make a film similar to this (but more serious, without the love twist). This film is 12 minutes and 12 seconds. Despite a lack of words, the music and shots are done well to create a sense of buildup. The story develops well throughout. (One character does make an inappropriate joke though.)</p>

<p>I had written a whole postings on the subtle messages that can be gleaned from this short.
